NuFACE is a manufacturer of skin care products and devices. It’s mostly known for its at-home facial toning devices that use microcurrent technology.
Project Overview
NuFACE sought to enhance their new mobile app with a step-by-step illustration of the microcurrent application process. The goal was to assist customers in identifying key “areas of focus” for their skincare devices.
Challenge
Initially, a line art illustration style had been developed for the app, but it felt too "hollow" and lacked the desired warmth, depth, character, and authenticity. NuFACE aimed to create illustrations that would bring the application process to life in a more engaging, expressive, and unbiased manner. They wanted the illustrations to maintain soft, sensual expressions while emphasizing the application focus areas.
The primary challenge was to create a sketched art style that effectively highlighted the key areas of focus for the microcurrent application process without overshadowing them. Striking the right balance between detailed and minimalistic sketches was crucial to ensure the illustrations were clear and informative, yet still conveyed the necessary sensual expressions.
Quick sketches helped in generating ideas, but achieving the right level of detail proved challenging. Too much detail could distract from the focus areas, while too little could fail to convey the necessary information. The solution required adopting a “less is more” approach to ensure that the illustrations were both effective and aesthetically pleasing, highlighting the application process in a way that was both clear and engaging.
